The Chukudu is a handmade wooden scooter from eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, especially around Goma and North Kivu, designed to transport heavy goods in areas where modern vehicles are scarce or unaffordable. Despite its basic construction, a Chukudu can carry up to 2 tons (4,400 pounds) — an incredible capacity for a manually operated vehicle.

Built almost entirely from locally sourced wood like eucalyptus, with parts such as wooden wheels and a basic brake system made from scrap rubber, the Chukudu is both practical and sustainable. Some versions include nails or metal reinforcements, but the design remains simple and low-cost.

Used mostly by small-scale traders, farmers, and transporters, the Chukudu is essential for carrying produce, charcoal, water, or construction materials from remote villages down slopes to towns—using only gravity and manpower.

With no fuel, no emissions, and minimal maintenance, the Chukudu is one of the most environmentally friendly vehicles in the world. It represents a powerful form of local innovation, meeting real-world needs with resourcefulness, resilience, and simplicity.

African proverbs for those who have lost truth in their lives “Let your prayer never become your own curse.”
